Who is behind this project?

About the project

Troyeville is a vibrant community but still endures many needs and deprivation. iThemba means trust, hope. This project will support Troyeville community to raise the “iThemba Tower”, a public art monument, a symbolic communication tower around which a diversity of people can share their collective hopes. This project will strengthen the community of downtown Johannesburg, support the livelihood of informal waste collectors and raise general awareness about recycling. The 20 meter-high installation will attract a lot media attention, becoming a landmark and symbol of inspiration.

The entire process will be documented into a short film, showing not only the ‘making-of’ but also the lives and aspirations of Johannesburg’s youth, the informal waste collectors and the impact of their participation in this project. The film will include interviews with the people and schools that are involved, capturing a story of transformation through creative engagement. The video and photo documentation will be distributed locally and internationally through radio, newspapers, as well as online art and environmental websites.
