About the project

Hello, I’m Eraldo Guerra, a social entrepreneur who first heard about Autism during my masters thesis in software engineering. During the theme selection, I heard about the history of Carly Fleischman, which inspired me to develop a technology that would enable a better quality of life for parents and their autistic children. We believe that making a child smile, allowing a mother to have hope to see their sons speak or live well in society is what makes our eyes shine. We don’t want to change the way that the autistic people see the world; instead we want to change the way the world sees Autism!! We need this investment in order to pay the team that develops the project, the infrastructure costs (servers, workstations, daily-use materials, etc) and travel logistics to be able to present and spread Can Game around. This investment is meant for helping us develop the project throughout the course of 1 year, which will afterwards be self-suficient through the app’s sales, costing an accessible value of only U$3.00. This is important because it allows families with every tier of income to benefit from Can Game’s features! Another appealing feature is the online environment, where educators, psychologists, speech therapists and parents could remotely track the treatment’s evolution (errors and problems), which is recorded in the device and later sent to this environment. It also allows the creation of a communication channel between everyone involved in the treatment, thus reducing the problems related to lack of information about the treatment. The idea for the business model is that for every “X” sales we get, we are able to cover our expenses and then donate an amount of app’s installations to the community and to those who need the technology for the treatment, but cannot afford. Our intended users are children, teenagers and adults with autism. It adds up to a huge population, up to 70 million people worldwide, 2 million only in Brazil (according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention). The app can be used in residences with the presence of a family member, which allows the treatment to keep happening outside the clinic environment, while the child feels like he/she is playing a game. That is important for the dissemination of the project template and feedback for continuous improvement. The paid version will be offered to clinics, hospitals, schools and doctors in general (speech therapists, psychologists, pediatricians and educators specifically). They can make use of the Can Game as an integrated tool to their treatment, which adds value to their business and becomes a market differentiator. For example, in Brazil there are 35.953 speech therapists (according to www.fonoaudiologia.org.br), 194.939 primary schools (according to www.mec.org.br) and 78 known associations that deal with autism (according to www.psiquiatriainfantil.com.br). Let’s take the following example: Joseph is a child with autism. He participated among 50 other children in a Can Game trial at the clinic which has a partnership with the project.

Joseph had a great difficulty in learning math, simple operations like subtraction, division, addition and multiplying. Through the advice of a psychologist who accompanied the test, we performed a mathematical activity where Joseph chose a character (a puppy) and blue for the background color of his character interaction.

The game begins with the puppy walking down the street alone. Suddenly he finds four bones. Soon after, another puppy that knows the first puppy, comes around, but he has no bone. The first puppy asked Joseph: How do I split my bones with my friend? At first we taught Joseph how to use the Microsoft Kinect and what he needed to do during the activity. The Microsoft Kinect records the video with his activity, the rights and wrongs of Joseph, for later evaluation. We realized that Joseph managed the activity really well, but did he learn? To know the answer for that question, watch this video and see for yourself.

Besides those stories, we have over 50 more about children that used the game as a way to learn by playing!

If you liked the project and want to help millions of autistic [children] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ctjNoeeVg-g) throughout the world, share this project! Multiply our reach, make this dream reach the right people! Thank you so much!!!

Do not want to change the way that our children see the world. We want to change the way the world sees our children.
