Thato Kgatlhanye (22) sees solutions where other people see waste. The Johannesburg-based entrepreneur founded Rethaka – a business that upcycles plastic and turns it into solar-powered backpacks. “There are a lot of problems in society and we always think the solution is money.” Since founding the business four years back, Kgathlanye has gone on to grace the cover of Forbes magazine, give a TedX talk as well as having her business being name-dropped by Bill Gates…twice.
Are you itching to change the world?

Applications for the Red Bull Amaphiko Academy open
Applications for the third Red Bull Amaphiko Academy in South Africa are now open. If you’re a creative changemaker with innovative ideas that tackle social problems, the academy is looking for you. We want early stage entrepreneurs who are using their talents, to make a difference in a sustainable way in their corner of the world. If you have a project that’s beyond idea stage and have taken the first steps in bringing it to life, we’re looking for you.
What is the academy?
The successful applicants will be hosted in Gauteng, where the academy will take place in May 2017. You’ll be part of 10 days of inspiring workshops and lectures, and work on your projects with leading experts and mentors. You’ll also network with social innovators from South Africa and the world. And this is just the beginning: You’ll also be part of a 18 month post-academy programme, which will help develop your business and skills further and expose you to more opportunities and networks. Red Bull will cover the accommodation and travel costs for the selected participants.
